A. If you live near the Medford area, you're more than welcome to join us! Bring a beading buddy and drop by the store. Give us your names, numbers and the name of the class you'd like to join. 5) Q. What types of stringing material are available and when should I use them?
A. In response to our customers requests, what follows is a brief description of stringing materials we recommend and when to use them.
  • CORD: The most popular cords are: Leather, Satin & Linen. They come in a range of colors and sizes. It is best to use beads with large holes. Cord is available in 1mm, 2mm or 3mm diameters.

  • NYMO: is a strong and versatile thread. Size 0 (zero), 00 and B are most commonly used for weaving seed beads. Medium to thicker sizes such as D and F are suitable for most projects. We suggest doubling your thread and using a needle. (•NO FISHING LINE• This should be left to the fish as it becomes brittle and breaks!)

  • TIGER TAIL: is a flexible, nylon coated wire. It is used for heavier beads. Tiger Tail cannot be knotted so it is necessary to use crimp beads. Tiger Tail will kink if bent and is not appropriate for lightweight beads.

  • SOFT FLEX WIRE: New to the market, this line has multiple steel cables (usually 49) wrapped around a central wire. It is strong, extremely flexible and does not kink. Finishing is with crimp beads. Soft Flex Wire is available in many colors and is ideal for any bead.

  • GRIFFIN THREAD (Nylon or Silk): is the traditional thread for knotting semi-precious stones, pearls, and other fine beads. Knotting, if done correctly, will give a necklace a fluid effect. Griffin thread comes in a rainbow of colors and a range of sizes. Silk is not recommended for anything other than knotting as it can stretch over time, and is not one of the stronger threads.

  • NEEDLES:are recommended when thread is used. We suggest doubling your thread and using a beading needle. FLEXIBLE WIRE NEEDLES have a large eye which collapses when it is drawn through a bead, it will fit easily through irregular bead holes. STRAIGHT NEEDLES are used when weaving (on or off looms), or when you prefer a stiff needle.

9) Q. What is the best way to finish jewelry strung with elastic or tiger tail?
A. Clear elastic and tiger tail stringing material has become a welcomed addition to most beaders' choices of stringing material. I believe no other stringing material has brought more people to the fun of beading than these.

Our most frequently asked questions regarding these materials are, "How do I get the clear elastic to stay tied?" or "How do I finish off jewelry stung with tiger tail?" We demonstrate our solution daily.

Using a crimping bead has worked well. After stringing on the beads for your piece, string on the crimp bead. Take the other end of the elastic and put it through the crimp from the opposite direction. When you look at the crimp there will be a tail on each side of the crimp. Take hold of those tails and pull them in opposite directions. Do this until no line is showing, but don't pull so tightly that you've pulled the elastic from the material. Using chain nosed pliers, crimp that crimping bead. Before cutting the tails, open your piece to it's fullest to be sure the crimp is holding. If things are looking good, then cut the tails close to the crimp. If a little line begins to show then pull the tails again, and re-crimp the bead.

Please note it is possible to crimp the bead to hard, and either cut the elastic or break the bead. A gentle, firm hand should do the job every time.
